India’s Chandrayaan 4 Mission: A Step Closer to Sending an Indian to the Moon
India’s scientific community is thrilled about the Union cabinet’s approval of the Chandrayaan 4 mission, which aims to bring lunar samples back to Earth. Tapan Misra, former director of the Space Applications Centre, explained that this mission is a significant step towards sending an Indian cosmonaut to the moon.
RC Kapoor, an astronomer and professor, described the mission as a lunar sample return mission that will use two rockets. The first rocket, similar to GSLV MkIII, will carry the ascender and descender modules, while the second rocket will follow later. The descender module will have a robotic arm to collect lunar samples and transfer them to the ascender module.
ISRO chairman S Somanath announced plans to launch the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) by 2028. He emphasized that the Chandrayaan 4 mission aims to demonstrate the technology needed to go to the moon and return safely, which is crucial for future manned missions to space, envisioned by the Prime Minister for 2040.
