India’s Car and Bike Sales Soar in July, But Tractors Struggle
Retail automobile sales in India saw a significant increase in July, growing by 13.84% compared to the previous year. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported that:
- Two-wheeler sales grew by 17%
- Three-wheeler sales increased by 13%
- Passenger vehicle sales rose by 10%
- Commercial vehicle sales went up by 6%
- Tractor sales, however, fell by 12%
The growth in two-wheeler sales is attributed to a thriving rural economy, positive monsoon effects, and government support programs. New product launches and better stock availability also played a role. The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024, offering incentives for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, further boosted sales.
Passenger vehicle sales saw a 14% growth, driven by new model launches and attractive pricing. However, challenges like heavy rains and intense competition remain. High inventory levels, reaching a historic high of 67-72 days, pose a significant risk for dealers.
Commercial vehicle sales grew by 6%, with mixed sentiments among dealers. Growth in construction and mining sectors helped, but continuous rainfall and negative rural market sentiment posed challenges.
FADA’s outlook for the near term is cautiously optimistic, with positive monsoon effects and the festive season expected to boost sales. However, heavy rainfall and high inventory levels could dampen demand. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts above-normal rainfall, which could lead to city flooding and landslides, potentially impacting auto retail sales.
Financial services firm Anand Rathi expects good volume growth across segments, with two-wheelers leading the way. Effective inventory management and stringent financial checks are essential to sustain growth and mitigate financial risks.
