COP29: India calls for barrier-free technology transfer, climate finance
India's Call for Global Cooperation and Trust at CoP29 in Baku
In New Delhi, India made a strong appeal for barrier-free technology transfer and fair climate finance at CoP29, highlighting the need for global cooperation and trust to drive effective climate action. This was emphasized at the 2024 Annual High-level Ministerial Roundtable on pre-2030 Climate Change Mitigation in Baku.
Key Areas for Climate Action
Leena Nandan, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, represented India and highlighted four crucial areas for effective climate response: unrestricted technology transfer, equitable climate finance, enhanced international cooperation, and building mutual trust.
Unrestricted Technology Transfer
India stressed the importance of transferring green technology to developing countries without barriers like Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) restrictions. Nandan urged CoP29 to facilitate technology deployment without these restrictions.
Equitable Climate Finance
The Indian delegation called for developed nations to fulfill their financial commitments, emphasizing that climate finance should be public, equitable, and accessible to help developing countries meet their climate targets.
International Cooperation and Trust
India highlighted the need for collective action and warned against unilateral trade measures that shift financial burdens onto developing nations. Mutual trust was emphasized as essential for effective global collaboration.
Nandan concluded by urging developed countries to build confidence and ensure the success of CoP29, setting a foundation for peaking emissions by 2030.
Doubts Revealed
CoP29
CoP29 stands for the 29th Conference of the Parties, which is a big meeting where countries come together to talk about how to protect the environment and fight climate change.
Baku
Baku is the capital city of Azerbaijan, a country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It's where the CoP29 meeting is being held.
Leena Nandan

Technology transfer
Technology transfer means sharing new and advanced technology from one country to another, especially from developed countries to developing ones, to help them grow and solve problems like climate change.
Intellectual Property Rights
Intellectual Property Rights are rules that protect the creations and inventions of people, like new technology, so others can't use them without permission. India wants these rules to be relaxed for climate technology.
Climate finance
Climate finance refers to money that is given to help countries deal with climate change, like building wind farms or protecting forests. India wants this money to be shared fairly among all countries.
Peaking emissions
Peaking emissions means reaching the highest point of pollution levels before they start to decrease. India aims to reach this point by 2030 to help fight climate change.
