India’s Big Renewable Energy Projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka

The Indian government has approved two major Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) projects with a total investment of Rs 13,595 crore. These projects aim to transfer 9 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan and Karnataka.

Rajasthan Project

The first project involves an investment of about Rs 12,241 crore and focuses on the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). It aims to evacuate 4.5 GW of renewable energy from the Fatehgarh Complex (1 GW), Barmer Complex (2.5 GW), and Nagaur (Merta) Complex (1 GW). The energy will be sent to Fatehpur, Orai, and the Mainpuri Region in Uttar Pradesh. This project is expected to be completed in two years.

Karnataka Project

The second project, costing Rs 1,354 crore, will evacuate 4.5 GW of renewable energy from Karnataka’s Koppal and Gadag areas. This project is scheduled to be completed by June 2027. Both projects will be implemented through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mode.

These initiatives are part of India’s ambitious goal to install 200 GW of linked renewable energy by 2030, out of a total renewable energy potential of 500 GW.
