Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Paris Olympics for Being Overweight
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics after she was found to be overweight in the 50 kg category. This news has saddened many, including R Ashoka, the Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Legislative Assembly, who said, “It’s a sad day for us. It is really very sad. I can’t say anything.”
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has lodged a strong protest with United World Wrestling (UWW) regarding the disqualification. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken to IOA President PT Usha, who is in Paris, and asked her to take necessary action.
Despite the best efforts by the Indian team, Vinesh Phogat weighed in a few grams over the 50 kg limit. The Indian contingent expressed regret over her disqualification and requested privacy for Vinesh. Vinesh had reached the finals after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. Following her disqualification, Yusneylis Guzman Lopez will compete for the gold against the United States’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.
