Leisure and holiday travel are becoming increasingly popular among wealthy and influential individuals in India. A recent survey by Amex Trendex India reveals that 97% of Indian adults with an annual income of USD 50,000 or more, who travel at least once a year, plan to travel during the upcoming festive season. Notably, 33% have already booked their trips.

The survey highlights that leisure is the primary motivation for travel, with 63% of respondents citing it as their main reason. Additionally, 54% wish to explore new places, and 27% aim to reconnect with family and friends. Indian travelers are willing to pay more for comfort and enjoyment, with 94% ready to spend extra for a convenient travel experience. Cost management is also important, as 73% plan to use travel credit card rewards, airline miles, or loyalty points to manage expenses.

Domestic travel remains the preferred choice, with 88% opting for destinations within India, while 61% are considering international trips. Sanjay Khanna, CEO and Country Manager of American Express Banking Corp India, stated, “Indian consumers are eager to elevate their holiday experiences, from thoughtful gift-giving to unforgettable travel adventures.”

The survey also shows a strong focus on holiday shopping and gifting, with 98% planning to buy gifts this season. Family and friends are the top recipients, with 73% and 65% of respondents, respectively, intending to give gifts to them. Popular gift categories include clothing and accessories (73% each), followed by tech products (55%). Additionally, 66% of Indians are leaning towards giving experiential gifts, such as entertainment and travel.

A significant 92% of respondents are seeking unique and personalized gifts, while 88% prefer shopping at stores that offer reward programs. The study also found that 64% of Indians are taking advantage of holiday discounts, and 59% are shopping during sales events. Credit card offers are a key consideration for 49% of shoppers, aiming to enhance their gift-buying experience. The survey provides insights into consumer sentiment and holiday behaviors across multiple countries, including India, Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
