Paris [France], July 25: India’s tennis duo Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji, along with singles player Sumit Nagal, are set to compete against French opponents in their first-round matches at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Men’s Doubles Matchup

World No. 4 doubles player Rohan Bopanna and his partner N Sriram Balaji, ranked 65th, will face Fabien Reboul and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round. Roger-Vasselin is ranked 11th in the ATP doubles rankings, while Reboul is 34th. Both pairs are unseeded in the men’s doubles event.

If Bopanna and Balaji advance past the French pair, they could face the winner of the match between Daniil Medvedev-Roman Safiullin and second seeds Kevin Krawietz-Tim Putz in the second round.

Men’s Singles Matchup

World No. 80 Sumit Nagal will compete against 68th-ranked Corentin Moutet in his opening match. A victory would see Nagal face either Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff (world No. 34) or Australia’s Alex de Minaur (world No. 6) in the second round.

Olympic History

The 44-year-old Rohan Bopanna is making his third Olympic appearance. He debuted at the London 2012 Olympics, partnering with Mahesh Bhupathi in men’s doubles and reaching the second round. At Rio 2016, Bopanna and Sania Mirza narrowly missed a bronze medal in mixed doubles, while Bopanna and Leander Paes were eliminated in the first round of men’s doubles. Bopanna did not compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Sumit Nagal made history at Tokyo 2020 by becoming the first Indian to win a singles match at the Olympics in over 25 years, defeating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. However, he was defeated by then-world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

N Sriram Balaji, 34, will make his Olympic debut in Paris, chosen by Bopanna as his partner for the men’s doubles event.
