Indian Table Tennis Team Faces Tough Challenges at Paris 2024 Olympics
The Indian table tennis team is gearing up for a challenging start at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The men’s team will face a tough test against four-time gold medalists and defending champions China in the opening round.
Since the team events were introduced during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China has won the men’s team competition in every edition. This is the first time India has qualified for the team events in table tennis at the Olympics.
The women’s team will compete against Romania in the round of 16 and could face Rio Olympics silver medalists Germany in the second round.
Women’s Singles
Star player Manika Batra will play against Great Britain’s 18-year-old Anna Hursey in the opening round. This will be Manika’s third Olympic appearance, having reached round three in Tokyo 2020. Anna Hursey is making her Olympic debut.
Sreeja Akula, the 16th seed in the women’s singles competition, will face Sweden’s Christina Kallberg in her round of 64 match. Christina did not advance past the first round in Tokyo 2020.
Men’s Singles
Veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal will compete against Slovenia’s Deni Kozul in his fifth Olympic appearance. Harmeet Desai will start his campaign against Zaid Abo Yaman of Jordan in the preliminary round. If Harmeet wins, he will face world number five Felix Lebrun from France in the main draw.
The table tennis competition will take place from July 27 to August 10 at South Paris Arena, featuring men’s and women’s singles, men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles events.
