Indian Students Worried as Canada Ends Fast-Track Study Visa Program

Indian students are concerned after Canada decided to end its fast-track Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program. This program, popular for its quick study permit processing, was a preferred choice for many aspiring to study in Canada. A student from Chandigarh expressed her worries, stating that the decision is unfair and influenced by politics. Visa counselor Rahul Arora also highlighted the negative impact on students’ dreams and ambitions.

The SDS, launched in 2018, offered faster processing for students from countries like India, China, and Brazil. It was discontinued on November 8, along with the Nigeria Student Express (NSE) for Nigerian students. However, applications submitted before the deadline will still be processed. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that the goal is to ensure equal and fair access to study permits for all international students.

Future applicants will need to follow Canada’s regular study permit processes, requiring a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter to study at designated learning institutions. This decision comes amid diplomatic tensions between Canada and India.
