Indian Students Safely Evacuated from Bangladesh Amid Unrest

Amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh, 40 Indian medical students from Meghalaya were safely evacuated from Dhaka and crossed the Sonamura border in Tripura on Saturday.

Efforts by Indian Officials

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed gratitude to Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha for their assistance in the evacuation process. He shared on X, “Our medical students from Bangladesh have safely crossed Sonamura border in Tripura. All the formalities are being completed for their onward journey to Shillong. Thank you @DrSJaishankar ji @DrManikSaha2 ji for all arrangements and BSF for all assistance.”

Government Coordination

CM Sangma mentioned that the state government was in constant touch with the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh to facilitate the evacuation. Buses were on standby in Agartala, and other logistics were arranged to ensure the students’ safe return.

Advisory for Indian Nationals

The Ministry of External Affairs advised Indian nationals in Bangladesh to follow the High Commission’s advisory, which recommended avoiding local travel amid violent protests. The High Commission and Assistant High Commissions provided helpline numbers for assistance.

Protests in Bangladesh

The protests in Bangladesh are driven by demands for reforms in the civil service quota system. The government has imposed a curfew and disabled mobile internet services to curb disinformation.

Hope for Resolution

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh expressed hope that the Bangladeshi government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, would resolve the matter soon.
