Indian Students Return Home Amid Bangladesh Protests

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has announced that over 4,500 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh due to ongoing protests. The High Commission of India in Dhaka, along with Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna, has been providing security escorts for safe travel to border-crossing points.

Additionally, 500 students from Nepal, 38 from Bhutan, and 1 from Maldives have also arrived in India. The MEA continues to coordinate with local authorities for the safety of Indian nationals.

The protests in Bangladesh are driven by demands for reform in the country’s quota system for civil service jobs, which reserves positions for specific groups, including descendants of those who participated in the 1971 War of Independence against Pakistan.

The MEA has advised Indian nationals in Bangladesh to avoid local travel amid the violent protests and to stay in touch with the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions for any assistance through emergency contact numbers.
