Indian Student Albin Shinto Suspected to Have Drowned in Riga, Latvia
The Embassy of India to Sweden and Latvia is closely coordinating with Latvian authorities after the suspected drowning of an Indian student named Albin Shinto in Riga. The embassy has assured Shinto’s family of all possible help.
According to a post by the Indian Embassy, they are in regular contact with Latvian authorities regarding the incident. Albin Shinto, who hails from Kerala, was swimming with four friends in the Jugla canal on the evening of July 18 when he encountered difficulties and began to sink.
Eyewitness Arhik Haries reported that two friends tried to save Shinto but also got into trouble. A passing fisherman managed to rescue the two friends, but Shinto was lost beneath the waves. Police and rescuers, including a diver, searched for two to three hours but could not find him. The search has been paused and will resume on Monday due to limited resources.
