Indian para-archers Harvinder Singh and Pooja Jatyan have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mixed Team Recurve Open at the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024. The Indian duo defeated Amanda Jennings and Taymon Kenton-Smith of Australia in a thrilling shoot-off. They will face either France or Poland in the next round.

Earlier, Harvinder Singh made history by winning a gold medal in the individual recurve para-archery event, becoming the first Indian to win a medal in this sport at both the Olympics and Paralympics. He defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in the final. Harvinder had also won a bronze medal in the recurve para-archery at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

India’s second medal in archery at the Paris Paralympics came from Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi, who won bronze in the mixed team compound event. Pooja Jatyan, despite her efforts, lost 4-6 to China’s Wu Chunyan in the Women’s Individual Recurve Open quarterfinals.

In other events, para-athlete Sachin Khilari won a silver medal in the men’s shot put F46 final with a throw of 16.32 meters, setting a new area best. The Indian contingent has so far won 24 medals, including five gold, nine silver, and ten bronze, and is ranked 15th in the medal tally. With more events to come, India has the chance to add to its record medal haul.
