Indian Navy Rescues Injured Chinese Mariner, Ambassador Xu Feihong Praises Effort

The Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, has commended the Indian Navy for their successful rescue of a critically injured Chinese mariner from a bulk carrier. The mariner is currently undergoing follow-up treatment.

On July 23, the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received a distress call from the bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN, located approximately 370 km from Mumbai. The call reported heavy blood loss due to a critical injury to a 51-year-old Chinese mariner and requested immediate evacuation.

In response, a Seeking helicopter was launched from the Indian Naval Air Station INS Shikra at 0550 hrs. Despite challenging conditions, including winds over 45 knots and heavy rolling of the ship, the patient was successfully airlifted from the bridge wing of the vessel. The mariner was then transported back to the air station and shifted to a hospital for further medical management. The ICGS Samrat was also diverted to assist in the operation.

This joint operation, coordinated by the MRCC and the Indian Navy, ensured the safe and timely evacuation of the patient.

Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the ASEAN meetings. They discussed the importance of respecting the Line of Actual Control and past agreements, and agreed on the need for strong guidance to complete the disengagement process.
