Indian Navy Launches Malpe and Mulki Ships for Anti-Submarine Warfare

The Indian Navy has launched two new ships, Malpe and Mulki, as part of its Eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft project. These are the fourth and fifth ships in the series and were built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

Launch Event

The launch took place in Kochi and was attended by Vijaya Srinivas and Vice Admiral V. Srinivas, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command. The event marked a significant step forward in the project.

Ship Details

The Malpe and Mulki are part of the Mahe class of vessels, named after important ports along India’s coastline. They are equipped with advanced, indigenously developed underwater sensors for anti-submarine operations, as well as Low Intensity Maritime and mine-laying operations. These ships can reach speeds of up to 25 knots and have an endurance of 1,800 nautical miles.

Significance

The launch of these ships highlights India’s progress in indigenous shipbuilding and supports the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. With over 80% indigenous content, the project is expected to boost domestic defense production, create jobs, and enhance national manufacturing capabilities.
