Indian Navy and Officials Rescue Flood Victims in Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, September 6: The Indian Navy is conducting relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas of Andhra Pradesh under the Eastern Naval Command. Naval helicopters are airdropping food packets, medical kits, and water bottles to stranded individuals. Flood Relief Teams (FRTs) are evacuating people to safety and distributing food to affected households. Over 180 people have been rescued so far.
Heavy rainfall, caused by a land-based cyclone, has led to severe flooding, submerging roads and houses. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the rain was fueled by moisture from the Arabian Sea and heat from the eastern parts of the country. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with central forces and local officials, is providing relief.
The flooding, triggered by a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, has caused rising water levels at the Prakasam Barrage and inundation in several regions. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and State Minister Nara Lokesh visited Vijayawada to assess the situation. Chouhan stated that the area received 400mm of rainfall in a short time, causing unprecedented damage, including crop loss affecting 2 lakh farmers.
Chouhan thanked Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his team for their continuous efforts. He mentioned that the Central government is providing all necessary help, and NDRF teams are actively working. Food packets, milk, and water are being delivered using drones, and sanitation work is ongoing. Home Minister Amit Shah has sent a team to study how to increase water discharge from the 70-year-old Prakasam Barrage.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu emphasized that protecting lives and property is a top priority. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan announced the use of drones to supply food and water and donated Rs 1 crore to the Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF).
