Indian Government Pushes for Early Discharge of Nationals from Russian Army, Says S Jaishankar

New Delhi, India – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that the Indian government is working to secure the early discharge of Indian nationals from the Russian armed forces. He stated that 13 Indian nationals have already left the Russian military, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety and well-being of others still serving.

Government’s Efforts

Jaishankar’s comments came in response to a question from Congress MP Adoor Prakash in the Lok Sabha. He emphasized that the government has been in contact with Russian authorities at various levels to address this issue. While the exact number of Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces is unknown, 66 individuals are currently seeking early discharge.

Prime Minister Modi’s Involvement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Russia for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he stressed the importance of releasing Indian nationals from the Russian military. Legal actions have been taken against those who misled Indian nationals into joining the Russian armed forces.

Concerns Raised by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed concerns about the increasing number of Indian nationals serving in foreign armies due to a lack of employment opportunities in India. He urged the government to take proactive measures to prevent such instances rather than reacting after lives are lost.

Human Trafficking Network Busted

In April, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uncovered a human trafficking network that was allegedly sending Indian nationals to the Russia-Ukraine war zone under the guise of lucrative job offers.
