Indian Fisherman Dies in Collision with Sri Lankan Naval Vessel Near Katchatheevu Island
The Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday morning to protest the death of an Indian fisherman. The incident occurred following a collision between a Sri Lankan naval vessel and an Indian fishing boat 5 nautical miles north of Katchatheevu Island.
Out of the four Indian fishermen on board, one died, another is missing, and two were rescued and brought ashore to Kankesanthurai. A search is ongoing for the missing fisherman. Indian Consulate Officials in Jaffna have been instructed to rush to Kankesanthurai to assist the fishermen and their families.
The Indian government emphasized the need for humane treatment of fishermen and adherence to existing agreements to prevent such incidents. The safety and security of Indian fishermen are of the highest priority, and issues have been regularly raised with Sri Lanka.
Recently, on July 23, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended nine fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram. On July 19, Rameswaram fishermen protested against frequent arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy and demanded the release of 74 fishermen arrested this year.
