Indian Envoy Sanjay Kumar Verma Responds to Canada-India Diplomatic Tensions

Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, was recalled by India due to concerns over the safety of Indian diplomats following actions by the Canadian government. Verma stated that Canada has not provided any evidence to support its allegations against India regarding an assassination plot. He emphasized that India, as a responsible democracy, does not interfere in other countries’ affairs.

Verma highlighted the influence of Khalistani extremists in Canada, who he claims are damaging relations between the two nations. He expressed disappointment over the allegations against him, which he believes harm India’s reputation. India has rejected Canada’s claims and expelled six Canadian diplomats, citing a lack of trust in the Canadian government’s ability to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats.

The diplomatic strain began when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has denied these allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. Trudeau admitted that Canada had not provided hard evidence, only intelligence, regarding the claims.
