Indian Embassy in Japan Issues Mega-Quake Advisory After Strong Earthquakes

The Indian Embassy in Japan has issued a mega-quake advisory for Indian citizens living in Japan. This comes after a strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Japan on Thursday. Experts warn that a ‘megaquake,’ which is an earthquake of over 8-magnitude, may strike Japan soon.

The embassy urges Indian citizens to follow guidelines set by Japanese authorities and to keep an eye on the embassy’s website and social media for updates. The Government of Japan has also issued an advisory for natural disaster preparedness.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has released an emergency bulletin about the Nankai Trough earthquake, warning of a massive earthquake. The Government of Japan has held a disaster response meeting, established a state of alert, and urged citizens to be prepared for earthquakes daily.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has set up a Disaster Management Headquarters (DMHQ) to enhance preparedness. The advisory from TMG estimates that if a megaquake occurs, Tokyo could experience seismic intensity 6 or lower and possibly a tsunami affecting island areas.

Indian citizens in Japan are advised to follow all warnings and instructions from the Government of Japan and local authorities. The Government of Japan reassures that there is no need to panic and that the advisory is meant to enhance preparedness.

Two powerful earthquakes struck off Japan’s southern coast on Thursday. The first was a 6.9-magnitude quake, followed by a 7.1-magnitude tremor, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
