Indian Consulate Cancels Consular Camps in Toronto
The Indian Consulate in Toronto has announced the cancellation of some consular camps due to inadequate security measures from Canadian authorities. This decision was shared on the social media platform X, highlighting the inability of security agencies to provide necessary protection for community camp organizers.
Recently, a consular camp co-organized by the Indian consulate outside the Hindi Sabha Temple in Brampton faced violent disruptions by anti-India extremists. This incident prompted a protest from India, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his concerns.
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa, along with consulates in Vancouver and Toronto, had organized these camps to assist local life certificate beneficiaries. However, due to the current security situation in Canada, the Indian authorities had requested strong security measures in advance.
The High Commission expressed disappointment over the disruptions and emphasized the importance of safety for applicants, including Indian nationals. Previous attempts to disrupt similar camps occurred in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2 and 3.
The ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have involved violations of international norms, such as the Vienna Convention, and surveillance of Indian diplomats, leading to formal protests by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
