Indian Coast Guard Rescues 14 Crew Members from Stranded Ship Near Raigad’s Kolaba Fort

The Indian Coast Guard successfully rescued 14 crew members from a JSW maritime vessel that ran aground near Raigad’s Kolaba Fort due to severe weather. Despite challenging conditions, the crew was evacuated by helicopter and safely disembarked at Alibag beach.

Details of the Incident

On July 25, the Indian Coast Guard ship Sankalp and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai received a distress call from the JSW Raigad, a 121.6-meter long bulk carrier with 14 Indian crew members. The vessel reported anchor dragging, loss of control, and flooding in the engine room. The turbulent sea conditions caused the vessel to run aground on reefs, one nautical mile from Alibag.

Rescue Operation

In the early hours of July 26, despite adverse conditions limiting air operations, the Indian Coast Guard launched a daring operation to evacuate the crew from the stranded vessel. All 14 crew members were successfully evacuated by a Coast Guard helicopter and safely disembarked at Alibag beach.

Further Assistance

The Indian Coast Guard station at Murud Janjira is coordinating with local authorities to provide further aid to the mariners. The JSW group confirmed that no casualties had been reported and that the vessel got caught in stormy weather between Jaigarh and Salav due to strong winds and low visibility.
