Indian chess grandmaster D. Gukesh was warmly welcomed at the Chennai airport after India’s historic double gold medal win at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest.

Gukesh was a key player in India’s triumph, scoring 9/10 points and helping the country secure its first-ever double gold in both men’s and women’s competitions. This achievement has placed him at world number five with a live rating of 2,794.
Gukesh’s Thoughts
Speaking to the media, Gukesh said, “In the Olympiad, I took it as an individual event. I just wanted to perform well in this specific tournament. I am very happy with my performance and the team’s performance. The result is proof that we were doing many things right and we were in the right spirit. I am very glad about whatever happened in Budapest. Now will be heading to the World Championship, and for now I am very happy. There are still a couple of months left and I will work harder and be fully ready.”
Men’s Team Performance
In the final round, India’s men’s team, consisting of D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, defeated Slovenia to clinch the gold medal. Wins from Gukesh and Erigaisi gave India a 2-0 lead, and Praggnanandhaa’s win and Vidit’s draw sealed the 3.5-0.5 victory.
Women’s Team Performance
The Indian women’s team, featuring Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev, also won gold by defeating Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. Harika, Divya, and Vantika won their matches, while Vaishali drew hers.
