Indian Automobile Market Sees Mixed Trends in FY25 Q2

The latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reveals a significant decline in passenger car sales in India during the second quarter of FY25. From July to September, car sales dropped by 20% year-on-year, with 3,18,805 units sold compared to 3,96,498 in the same period last year.

Goods carriers also faced a downturn, with sales decreasing by 15.8%, totaling 69,514 units, down from 82,538 units the previous year. Light commercial vehicles saw a 10.2% decline, with 1,26,370 units sold compared to 1,53,927 units last year.

Despite these declines, the two-wheeler market showed positive growth. Scooter sales increased by 16.9%, reaching 18.32 lakh units, while motorcycle sales rose by 10.2%, totaling 32.09 lakh units.

However, the electric rickshaw segment experienced a sharp decline, with sales dropping by 30.7% to 7,227 units from 10,430 units last year.

Overall, the Indian automobile market in the second quarter of FY25 presents a mixed picture, with declines in passenger cars and commercial vehicles but growth in two-wheelers.

FY25 Q2 -: FY25 Q2 refers to the second quarter of the financial year 2025. In India, the financial year starts on April 1st and ends on March 31st of the next year. So, FY25 Q2 would be from July to September 2024.
