Indian Army and Russia’s Land Forces Meet in New Delhi to Boost Defence Cooperation
The third India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) Sub-Working Group meeting was held in New Delhi on June 26-27. The meeting aimed to enhance defence cooperation, military training, military education, and joint exercises between the Indian Army and Russia’s Land Forces.
The Indian Army shared on X, “3rd #India #Russia Inter Governmental Commission (IRIGC) Sub Working Group (Land) Meeting between #IndianArmy & #LandForces, Russian Federation was held at #NewDelhi from 26-27 Jun 2024. The Talks focused on defence cooperation, military training, military education & joint exercises between the two Armies.”
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia, which may occur in July. This visit would be PM Modi’s first trip to Russia since 2019 and since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. President Vladimir Putin last visited New Delhi in 2021 for the annual India-Russia Summit. PM Modi and President Putin last met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 16, 2022.
Despite India’s growing ties with the US and other Western nations, it has not publicly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. India has increased its purchase of Russian crude oil to manage domestic prices but continues to advocate for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
