Indian Air Force Uses Rafale Jet to Shoot Down High-Altitude Spy Balloon

Indian Air Force Demonstrates High-Altitude Strike Capability

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully demonstrated its ability to neutralize high-altitude threats by shooting down a Chinese spy balloon-type target at over 55,000 feet. This operation took place along the eastern front, showcasing the IAF’s advanced capabilities.

Background and Context

In early 2023, the United States used an F-22 Raptor fighter jet to down a Chinese spy balloon over the sea. Inspired by this, the IAF engaged in discussions with the American Air Force to address similar challenges posed by high-altitude balloons.

The Operation

Under the leadership of Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, the IAF used a Rafale fighter jet to target a smaller balloon with a payload, simulating a Chinese spy balloon. The balloon was successfully shot down using an inventory missile, proving the IAF’s capability in such operations.

Leadership and Strategy

The operation was conducted when Air Chief Marshal AP Singh was Vice Chief of Air Staff, and Air Marshal SP Dharkar was the Eastern Air Commander. Air Marshal Surat Singh, who was then Director General Air Operations, is now the Eastern Air Commander.

Future Preparations

The IAF is developing standard operating procedures to address future threats from such balloons, which are believed to be used for surveillance and can stabilize over areas of interest.
