Indian Air Force Proposes Purchase of 10 Tapas Drones for Enhanced Surveillance

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has made a proposal to the central government to buy 10 Tapas drones to enhance unmanned surveillance capabilities. Out of these, six drones will be for the IAF and four for the Indian Navy.

Development and Manufacturing

The Tapas drones are medium-altitude, long-endurance drones developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by a consortium of Bharat Electronics Limited and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Current Status and Future Plans

Although the Tapas drones have not fully met the defence forces’ requirements, limited inductions will help in upgrading and refining them. The IAF, which already operates Israeli-origin drones, plans to use the Tapas drones for surveillance on northern and western fronts. The Indian Navy will use them for maritime surveillance.

Support for Make in India

The IAF has been a strong supporter of the Make in India initiative, placing significant orders for indigenous equipment. The first Tapas drone is expected to be ready for delivery within 24 months of signing the contract.

Performance and Testing

During trials, the Tapas drones reached an altitude of 28,000 feet and flew for over 18 hours, though they have not yet met the goal of flying at 30,000 feet for over 24 hours.
