Indian Air Force and Rescue Teams Aid Landslide Victims in Wayanad, Kerala
Wayanad, Kerala, August 3: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has airlifted one ZAWER and four REECO radars from Siachen and Delhi to assist in search operations in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad. IAF helicopters Mi-17V5 and ALH are actively involved in rescue missions, including daring winching rescues by ALH from Sulur. The state government requested these radars to enhance deep search missions, and essential services recovery is ongoing.
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan stated that not all bodies have been recovered yet, and the focus remains on rescue and relief efforts. He praised the coordination between the central and state governments, with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coastal Guards, and NDRF quickly reaching the affected areas and building a bridge for access to ground zero. Currently, 10,000 people are living in relief camps, and rehabilitation efforts will follow once the emergency subsides.
The Prime Minister instructed all central government agencies, especially the defense forces, to respond immediately to the disaster. In a coordinated effort, the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Army, and Indian Air Force successfully rescued three individuals stranded at Soochipara Waterfalls in Wayanad. The rescue operation involved both land and air resources, ensuring the safe recovery of all three personnel.
The death toll from the landslides on July 30 in Chooralmala and Mundakkai of Wayanad stands at 308, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George. So far, 215 bodies and 143 body parts have been recovered, including 98 males, 87 females, and 30 children. Post-mortem procedures have been completed on 212 bodies and 140 body parts, with 148 bodies identified by relatives.
