India Works to Free Citizens from Russian Army: PM Modi and NSA Doval’s Efforts
The Indian government is actively working to secure the release of Indian nationals who were recruited into the Russian army. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 35 Indian nationals have been discharged since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia in July. This brings the total number of Indians discharged to 45, including 10 who were released before the PM’s visit.
Prime Minister Modi’s Efforts
During his visit to Russia in July, Prime Minister Modi discussed the matter with President Vladimir Putin. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “In July, when our Prime Minister travelled to Russia, he also took up the matter with President Putin. And since the Prime Minister’s visit, 35 Indian nationals have been discharged. Prior to July, his visit, 10 Indian nationals had been discharged. So 45 Indian nationals have been discharged so far.”
Jaiswal added that several of the discharged nationals have already returned to India, with six arriving two days ago. Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of approximately 50 more Indian nationals still with the Russian army.
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval’s Visit
National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval is currently visiting Russia. His visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s recent trips to Russia and Ukraine. Doval attended the BRICS National Security Advisers meeting in Saint Petersburg and met with Russia’s Secretary of Security Council Sergey Shoigu. He also met with President Putin and exchanged a handshake.
The Russian Embassy in India shared pictures of the meeting and mentioned that President Putin proposed a bilateral meeting with PM Modi on October 22 during the BRICS Summit in Kazan. This meeting aims to summarize the outcomes of their joint work and outline future prospects.
India’s Stance on Russia-Ukraine Conflict
During PM Modi’s visit to Russia in July, he met with President Putin at the Kremlin to discuss various sectors like trade, commerce, security, agriculture, technology, and innovation. This was PM Modi’s first visit to Russia and Ukraine since the war between Moscow and Kyiv began in 2022. India has consistently advocated for “peace and diplomacy” to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
