India Wins T20 World Cup 2024
Rohit Sharma Retires, New Captain to be Decided
India’s cricket team, known as the Men in Blue, won the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa by seven runs in Barbados. This victory marks India’s second T20 World Cup win.
After the win, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket, leaving the team without a captain. Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said that the new captain will be chosen by the selectors.
Shah praised Hardik Pandya for his performance in the World Cup, despite a poor season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He mentioned that the selectors had faith in Hardik, and he proved himself during the tournament.
Match Highlights
India won the toss and chose to bat first. They were initially struggling at 34/3, but a strong partnership between Virat Kohli (76) and Axar Patel (47) helped them recover. India finished their innings at 176/7.
South Africa’s chase of 177 runs started poorly, but a partnership between Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) brought them back into the game. Heinrich Klaasen’s half-century (52) posed a threat, but India’s bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya made a strong comeback, restricting South Africa to 169/8.
Virat Kohli was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding performance. This win ended India’s over 10-year drought of ICC trophies, their last being the Champions Trophy in 2013.
