India Warns Citizens in Kenya Amid Violent Protests Over Tax Hike

India has issued an advisory for its nationals in Kenya as protests against a tax hike have turned violent. The Indian Embassy in Kenya advised Indian nationals to exercise utmost caution and avoid areas affected by the protests until the situation improves. They also recommended following local news and the embassy’s updates.

The protests, called ‘7 Days of Rage,’ are in response to the Finance Bill 2024 and have led to widespread unrest. Auma Obama, the half-sister of former US President Barack Obama, was teargassed during a live interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo while with teenage protestors.

These demonstrations come as Kenya’s international profile rises, following US President Joe Biden’s designation of the country as a ‘major non-NATO ally,’ the first such designation for a sub-Saharan African country.
