India to Host Quad Summit: S Jaishankar Discusses New Ideas

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that India will host the Quad Summit later this year. The agenda is still under discussion, with new ideas like disaster resilience and physical connectivity being considered.

Addressing the media, Jaishankar said, “India is the host for this year’s Quad and we are still discussing when to do the Summit.” He added that the agenda includes disaster resilience, digital and critical emerging technologies, and building capacities across the Indo-Pacific.

Jaishankar elaborated, “There are two ideas, one is how to do global good, and the second is how do you give countries the ability to make more choices freely based on merits. Our contribution will be to build in them the capacity to evaluate and make those choices.”

Foreign Ministers from Australia, India, Japan, and the US met in Tokyo to reaffirm their commitment to global good. A joint statement said, “We look forward to India hosting the next Quad Leaders’ Summit later this year, and to the United States hosting the next Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in 2025.”

US National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby confirmed the commitment to the summit, though no date is set yet. The US presidential elections are scheduled for November this year. President Joe Biden has been instrumental in elevating the Quad meetings to include national leaders.
