India Sends Medical Help to Haiti Amid Crisis
India has sent humanitarian assistance to Haiti, which includes 9 tonnes of medical supplies like blood transfusion essentials. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared this news on social media, stating, “India sends humanitarian assistance to Haiti! In solidarity with the people of Haiti, India’s humanitarian assistance containing 9 tonnes of medical supplies left New Delhi today, for Port-au-Prince.”
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the MEA, also shared a post on his social media account about the assistance provided by India to Haiti.
Haiti is currently facing severe challenges, including gang violence, a collapsing health system, and a lack of essential supplies. These issues have led many Haitians to take dangerous journeys to leave the country. Recently, at least 40 people died when a boat carrying over 80 migrants caught fire off the coast of Haiti. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that Haiti’s Coast Guard rescued 41 survivors.
Gregoire Goodstein, IOM’s chief of mission in Haiti, blamed the tragedy on the country’s spiraling security crisis and lack of safe migration pathways. He stated, “Haiti’s socio-economic situation is in agony. The extreme violence over the past months has only brought Haitians to resort to desperate measures even more.”
Despite the crisis, neighboring countries have repatriated over 86,000 Haitian migrants this year. In March alone, forced returns increased by 46%, reaching 13,000.
There is some hope for improvement with the recent appointment of Prime Minister Garry Conille and the arrival of several hundred foreign forces to support Haiti’s National Police. The United Nations Security Council-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, led by Kenya, will start operations in Port-au-Prince.
