India’s tablet market experienced a significant increase in shipments, with 1.84 million units shipped from April to June 2024, marking a 128.8% year-over-year growth, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Reasons for Growth

The Uttar Pradesh government’s distribution of tablets to students and increased demand for affordable tablets contributed to this rise. The slate tablet market grew by 178.1% year-on-year, while the detachable tablet market grew by 23.6% year-on-year.

Consumer Segment Insights

Priyansh Tiwari, Research Analyst at IDC India and South Asia, noted that the consumer segment saw its third consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Tablets priced between USD 200 and USD 300 are in high demand due to good specifications and attractive discounts and cashbacks.

Market Leaders

According to the IDC report, Samsung led the market with a 48.7% share during the April-June quarter, topping both the commercial and consumer segments. Acer Group followed with a 23.6% share, and Apple stood third with a 9.5% share, showing growth in both segments. Lenovo and Xiaomi held the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Future Predictions

Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager at IDC India and South Asia, mentioned that the commercial segment was strong due to key education deals and good momentum in the SMB segment. He anticipates high double-digit growth in the tablet market in India for 2024, driven by more education deals and high consumer demand during online sales in the second half of the year.
