India Seeks Extradition of Khalistani Terrorist Arsh Dalla from Canada
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has urged Canada to extradite Arshdeep Singh Gill, also known as Arsh Dalla, a designated Khalistani terrorist. Dalla was arrested in Canada following a shooting incident in Milton, Ontario. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India expects Dalla to be extradited to face justice due to his criminal activities in both India and Canada.
Arsh Dalla’s Criminal Background
Arsh Dalla is involved in over 50 cases of murder, extortion, and terrorist acts, including terror financing. In 2023, he was declared a terrorist under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. A Red Corner Notice was issued against him in May 2022. Despite India’s request for his provisional arrest in July 2023, Canada initially declined.
Legal Proceedings and International Cooperation
The Ontario Court is set to hear Dalla’s case. India has provided Canada with detailed information about Dalla’s activities and assets under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty. The Department of Justice of Canada requested further details, which India supplied in March 2023.
Background and Tensions
Dalla moved to Canada from Punjab in 2018 and is linked to the Dalla Lakhbir gang, accused of running a violent extortion ring in Punjab. The extradition request comes amid strained relations between India and Canada, following allegations against India in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a close associate of Dalla.
