India Post Celebrates Madras Veterinary College’s 121st Anniversary
In Chennai, the Department of Posts, Chennai City North Division, marked the 121st anniversary of the Madras Veterinary College (MVC) by releasing a special cover. This cover, unveiled on Friday, showcases the rich heritage and achievements of MVC, featuring an image of its iconic building and a unique cancellation based on the college’s logo.
History of Madras Veterinary College
Established on October 1, 1903, MVC was the third veterinary college in India. Initially, it offered a three-year diploma known as the Graduate of Madras Veterinary College. In 1935, it became the first veterinary college in India to affiliate with a university, Madras University, and began offering a B.V.Sc. degree program. This program was initially three years and one term, later extended to five years.
Advanced Programs and Affiliations
In 1958, MVC started awarding the M.V.Sc degree, and in 1977, it introduced a Ph.D. program. The Directorate for Veterinary Education and Research was established in 1969, with the Dean of MVC as its Director. In 1974, MVC affiliated with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and became a constituent unit in 1976. In 1989, it became part of the newly formed Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), the first standalone veterinary university in India and Southeast Asia.
Recent Achievements
In 2023, TANUVAS ranked twelfth among institutions in agriculture and allied sectors and first among state veterinary universities in India, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework.
