India Plans New Military Airfields in Lakshadweep to Monitor Chinese Activities
India has approved a major plan to build military airfields in Lakshadweep to keep an eye on growing Chinese activities in the region. The Central government cleared the proposals at a high-level meeting. The plan includes building a new airbase in Minicoy islands and extending the existing airfield on Agatti island in the Arabian Sea.
The dual-purpose airfields will be used by both military and commercial airlines, capable of deploying all types of fighter and transport aircraft, along with long-range drones. This move comes as the Chinese Navy expands its presence in the Indian Ocean Region and collaborates with the Pakistan Navy.
The Indian Air Force will lead the project, which will also involve the Indian Coast Guard. The Minicoy airbase will extend the defense forces’ surveillance area in the Arabian Sea and boost tourism in the region. The Minicoy islands are located about 50 miles from the Maldives.
