India Launches Special Portal to Speed Up Visas for Chinese Technicians

The Ministry of Home Affairs in India has launched an online portal to fast-track visas for technicians under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. This initiative aims to reduce visa processing time from 4-5 months to within 30 days, primarily benefiting Chinese technicians needed for machine installation and repair in Indian factories.

According to a government official, the portal has been operational for about a week. The goal is to ensure smoother approvals of visas for technicians, mostly from China. A meeting was also held with stakeholders to explain the workings of the new portal.

Over the years, the visa approval process for Chinese ventures and expert personnel has become more rigorous, requiring prior approval from the Indian central government. Typically, these experts need a visa for 3-6 months.

This move is significant as some domestic manufacturing firms have reported delays in getting visas for Chinese technicians, who are essential for tasks such as machine installation, repair, and worker training in India. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) collaborated with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs to create this framework that will expedite visas for engineers and technicians required for installing Chinese-made machinery in Indian factories.
