India Launches 3rd Phase of Swachh Survekshan 2024 to Tackle Waste Management

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in India has launched the third phase of the 9th edition of Swachh Survekshan 2024. This phase will focus on evaluating the entire value chain of waste management at Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs).

What is Swachh Survekshan?

Swachh Survekshan is a comprehensive survey that assesses city cleanliness in four quarters. The first two quarters include telephonic feedback from citizens, the third quarter focuses on processing facilities, and the fourth quarter highlights field assessments.

Importance of Bulk Waste Generators

Urban India generates about 150,000 tonnes of waste per day. BWGs, which include residential and commercial complexes, government ministries, and social infrastructure like hotels and airports, generate 30-40% of city waste. They are required to segregate waste at the source and ensure scientific processing of biodegradable waste.

Goals of the Survey

The survey aims to reduce the management and financial burden on urban local bodies, restrict waste from entering landfills, and reduce pollution and the city’s carbon footprint. The third quarter of Swachh Survekshan 2024 will start on July 5, 2024, and the fourth quarter is expected around September-October 2024.
