India Hosts 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship in New Delhi

New Delhi is set to host the 20th edition of the Asian Women’s Handball Championship from December 1 to December 10. This marks the first time South Asia’s World Handball League (WHL) India – Women will host this prestigious event. The championship is supported by the Asian Handball Federation (AHF), the South Asian Handball Federation (SAHF), and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS).

Teams from India, Iran, South Korea, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, and Singapore will compete at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Nearly 200 players will vie for continental glory and a chance to qualify for the 2025 IHF World Women’s Handball Championship in Germany and the Netherlands.

Abdullah Al-Theyab, Assistant Director of Technical of the AHF, expressed excitement about hosting the event in India, highlighting the country’s potential as a sporting nation. He praised the WHL’s efforts in promoting women’s handball and thanked the Handball Federation of India for their dedication.

The championship was initially planned for Almaty, Kazakhstan, but was relocated to India due to unforeseen circumstances. Swapnil Jain, Managing Director of Pavna Group and co-promoter of the WHL, sees this as a milestone for Indian handball, especially after the Indian women’s team won a bronze medal at the Asian Women’s Club Championship.

India will compete in the championship for the eighth time, with strong support from WHL, HAI, and MYAS. The team aims to make a memorable home debut, as the top four teams will qualify for the World Championship.
