India Voices Concern Over Blue Line Security
India has expressed worry about the worsening security situation along the Blue Line, a boundary separating Lebanon and Israel since the 1970s. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the need to respect the inviolability of UN premises and ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers. This comes after Israeli forces allegedly fired at a UNIFIL watchtower in southern Lebanon, injuring two Indonesian peacekeepers.
UNIFIL’s Role and Recent Developments
UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, was established in 1978 following Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. It monitors the Blue Line, a 120km line of withdrawal identified by the UN. Recently, an Israeli tank allegedly fired at a UNIFIL watchtower, which UNIFIL condemned as a “grave violation of international humanitarian law.”
Escalating Tensions
UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix warned of increasing risks to peacekeepers amid hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. The conflict has intensified, with Israeli strikes in Lebanon resulting in casualties, including 22 deaths and 117 injuries in a Beirut neighborhood.
