India Expands LNG and Oil Refining Capacity

India is working hard to become more energy self-sufficient. One big step is increasing the capacity of Petronet LNG’s Dahej terminal in Gujarat from 17.5 MMTPA to 22.5 MMTPA. This terminal is the largest place in India where LNG is stored and turned back into gas.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared this news, saying it is part of India’s journey towards energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India imports 45% of its natural gas, mostly from the Middle East and the US. This gas is used in many industries like fertilizer, refinery, and petrochemicals, as well as for city gas.
Another important project is the expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam. This refinery will increase its capacity from 3 million tonnes per year to 9 MMTPA by 2024. The project has a budget of Rs 28,026 crore and includes building a 1,640 km pipeline from Paradip Port to Numaligarh to transport imported crude oil.
The Numaligarh Refinery is the largest of the four refineries in Assam and plays a big role in the state’s economy.
