India Criticizes Canada Over Inaction on Extradition Requests and Diplomatic Tensions
The Ministry of External Affairs in India has expressed frustration with Canada for not acting on extradition requests for criminals and anti-India elements. According to spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, there are 26 pending extradition requests with Canada, some over a decade old. These include individuals like Gurjeet Singh and Arshdeep Singh Gill, wanted on terror charges.
Jaiswal highlighted that despite sharing security information with Canada, no action has been taken. He pointed out a contradiction where individuals India wants deported are now blamed by Canadian authorities for crimes in Canada, suggesting India’s responsibility.
This statement follows Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations that Indian diplomats were involved in collecting information on Canadians, linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Trudeau admitted his government provided only intelligence, not proof, regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
The diplomatic tension escalated when Canada labeled Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in Nijjar’s death investigation, leading India to withdraw its High Commissioner and other diplomats from Canada. Jaiswal stated that India had no faith in Canada’s ability to ensure their safety.
