India Congratulates Sri Lanka’s NPP on Election Victory
India has extended its congratulations to Sri Lanka’s National People’s Power (NPP) party following their success in the parliamentary elections. The High Commission of India in Colombo congratulated President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the NPP, on the party’s victory. India reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
Election Results
The NPP, a leftist coalition led by President Dissanayake, achieved a landslide victory in the snap parliamentary elections. The coalition secured 159 seats out of the 225-member parliament, gaining a two-thirds majority. This victory allows Dissanayake to fulfill his promises, including the potential abolition of the executive presidency.
Opposition Performance
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa’s party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), won 40 seats. The New Democratic Front (NDF), supported by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, secured five seats. Other parties, including the SLPP, ITAK, SB, SLMC, UNP, and DTNA, won a few seats each.

Dissanayake, who won the presidential elections in September, called for snap legislative elections to gain a new mandate. The new parliamentary mandate will help him address the economic challenges facing Sri Lanka, which has been struggling with its worst economic crisis since independence. The crisis was exacerbated by economic mismanagement, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2019 Easter bombings.
