Geneva, Switzerland – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described the relationship between India and China as ‘complex’ during a conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. He highlighted the long-standing trade issues and called the economic relationship ‘unfair and imbalanced.’

Historical Context and Recent Clashes

Jaishankar mentioned the difficult history between the two nations, including the 2020 clash at Galwan Valley where Indian and Chinese troops confronted each other. He noted that while 75% of disengagement issues have been resolved, some challenges remain. He emphasized the importance of achieving peace and tranquillity to explore further possibilities.

Recent Diplomatic Efforts

On August 29, India and China held the 31st meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) in Beijing. Both sides agreed to uphold peace and tranquillity in border areas and to intensify contact through diplomatic and military channels.

Trade and Technology Issues

Jaishankar also pointed out difficulties in other sectors such as technology, telecom, and digital. He criticized the economic relationship as being very unfair, with China having better market access in India than vice versa.

Jaishankar’s European Tour

Jaishankar is currently in Geneva, where he will meet the Swiss Foreign Minister to review and enhance bilateral ties. He arrived in Switzerland after visiting Germany and Saudi Arabia, where he met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings.
