India-Canada Tensions Rise Over Allegations by Justin Trudeau

In New Delhi, leading foreign policy experts have shared their views on the strained relationship between India and Canada. Defense expert Shiwalee Deshpande highlighted the seriousness of the situation, attributing the tension to comments made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She noted India’s strong response, including recalling Indian diplomats and expelling Canadian diplomats, as a demonstration of India’s strength.

The conflict stems from Canada’s allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India has consistently denied. Deshpande criticized Trudeau’s actions as childish and emphasized India’s capability to take tough measures.

KP Fabian, a former Indian Ambassador to Canada, echoed the Ministry of External Affairs’ stance, suggesting that India might ask more Canadian diplomats to leave to maintain diplomatic balance. He criticized Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly’s public allegations, suggesting they should have been handled through diplomatic channels.

Both Indian and Canadian societies are calling for de-escalation of the situation.
