India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions: MEA Criticizes PM Trudeau’s Inaction

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has expressed concerns over the Canadian government’s lack of action against anti-India elements, despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claims of supporting the ‘One India’ policy. The diplomatic tensions escalated when Canada labeled India’s High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation of Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death. In response, India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats from Canada.

MEA’s Concerns

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the gap between Trudeau’s words and actions, stating that no action has been taken against those promoting separatist ideologies. Jaiswal emphasized the lack of faith in the Canadian government’s ability to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats, leading to their withdrawal.

Trudeau’s Admission

Prime Minister Trudeau admitted that Canada had not provided India with hard evidence, only intelligence, regarding Nijjar’s killing. He acknowledged India’s request for evidence and expressed a desire for cooperation.

MEA’s Response

The MEA criticized Trudeau’s “cavalier behavior” for damaging India-Canada relations, reiterating that Canada has not presented any evidence to support its allegations against India. The MEA holds Trudeau responsible for the strained relations.

Background

The tensions began when Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing, which India has denied, accusing Canada of harboring extremist elements. Nijjar, designated a terrorist by India, was killed outside a Gurdwara in Surrey last year.
