India Strengthens Defense with New Submarines and Drones
In a significant move to enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities, the Cabinet Committee on Security has approved two major defense deals. These include the construction of two nuclear-powered submarines and the purchase of 31 Predator drones from the United States.
Nuclear Submarines
The Indian Navy is set to receive two nuclear-powered attack submarines, which will significantly enhance its strength in the Indian Ocean Region. These submarines will be built at the Ship Building Centre in Vishakhapatnam, with a budget of approximately Rs 45,000 crore. The project will involve private sector companies like Larsen and Toubro. This initiative is part of India’s long-term plan to have six such submarines, separate from the Arihant class submarines already under construction.
Predator Drones
The second major deal involves acquiring 31 Predator drones from American company General Atomics. This purchase is under a Foreign Military Sales contract and had to be finalized before October 31. The Indian Navy will receive 15 drones, while the Army and Air Force will each get eight. These drones will be deployed at two bases in Uttar Pradesh and are expected to enhance peacetime surveillance. Indian-made equipment from DRDO and Solar Industries may be incorporated as part of the Make in India initiative.
