India and US Sign Important Defence Agreement During Rajnath Singh’s Visit
Washington DC, August 23: The United States and India have signed an agreement to provide mutual priority support for goods and services that promote national defence. This arrangement will help both countries acquire necessary industrial resources to address unexpected supply chain disruptions and meet national security needs.

Two significant documents were signed in Washington DC as part of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to the United States. Senior defence officials from both countries concluded the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA) and a Memorandum of Agreement regarding the Assignment of Liaison Officers.

The SOSA was signed by Vic Ramdass, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Industrial Base Policy, on behalf of the United States, and Samir Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisitions), on behalf of the Indian Ministry of Defence. India is now the 18th SOSA partner of the US, joining countries like Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Vic Ramdass stated, “This Security of Supply Arrangement represents a pivotal moment in the US-India Major Defence Partner relationship and will be a key factor in strengthening the US-India Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI).” He also mentioned looking forward to hosting the next DTTI meeting to deepen cooperation between defence industrial bases.
Commitments and Benefits
Under the arrangement, the US and India commit to supporting each other’s priority delivery requests for critical national defence resources. The US will provide India assurances under the US Defense Priorities and Allocations System (DPAS), while India will establish a government-industry Code of Conduct to ensure priority support for the US.
The US Department of Defence highlighted that SOSAs are crucial for strengthening interoperability with US defence trade partners and addressing supply chain issues during peacetime, emergencies, and armed conflicts.
Upcoming Meetings
During his US visit, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will hold a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin and meet with Jake Sullivan, the US Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. The visit aims to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
