India and Timor-Leste to Open Embassies, President Murmu to Visit Fiji, Timor-Leste, and New Zealand

India has warmly welcomed Timor-Leste’s intention to open an embassy in New Delhi, announced by Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs. This follows India’s announcement in September 2023 to open its mission in Timor-Leste.

President Droupadi Murmu will visit Fiji, Timor-Leste, and New Zealand in August. This marks the first head of state-level visit from India to Timor-Leste, where she will meet President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. The visit aims to enhance cooperation in IT, healthcare, agriculture, and more.

Before Timor-Leste, President Murmu will visit New Zealand from August 7 to 9, invited by Governor General Cindy Kiro. She will address an international education conference in Wellington and meet the Indian diaspora in Auckland. The Indian community in New Zealand is about 300,000 strong.

President Murmu’s first stop will be Fiji on August 5, where she will meet President Wiliame Katonivere and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations under India’s Act East policy, focusing on Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
